WandaVision Episode 4 Review: We Interrupt This Programme

WandaVision begins to connect the dots in what could be it's best episode yet.

What. An. Episode.

WandaVision has, from the moment the first trailer aired, been nothing like we have ever seen from a superhero TV show. The first three episodes took us to a whole new style of Superhero TV with it's 60's 70's and 80's sitcom style, episode four changed the game once again combining the sitcom world with the MCU world in what may well could be the best WandaVision episode yet.

The show wastes no time in combining the wider MCU when Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) is seen coming back to life after the blip (redusting?). The tie to Endgame was a great addition fully bring a show that to date had very little to do with any avenger activities outside of Wanda and Vision. Monica's restoration brings with it the realisation that her mother has died (Maria from Captain Marvel).

This of course confirms the idea that everyone who had been blipped (I guess we are calling it that) are placed back where they left, something we saw briefly in Spider-Man Far From home, it's nice touch and does well in establishing where Maria is. It was also great to see some more fall out from Endgame after so long.

This episode does really feel like an advert to the series, the show takes it's time here to establish what's needed, something I feel other shows might have tried to squeeze in with direct Westview action. Someone who benefits a lot from this is Monica as she's established as a very good sword agent (with some hints to extra terrestrial activities), this of course leads to her arrival at Westview to partner with FBI agent Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) from Ant-Man.

Jimmy and Monica are not the only MCU alumni present as Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) returns after not being seen since Thor: The Dark World (Eek I mentioned it). Darcy is recruited by SWORD who are surrounding the town constantly trying to infiltrate the reality bubble. SWORD's presence occurs after Monica is sucked into the town, of course becoming Geraldine.

The episode then connects the dots for us, revealing the origin of the SWORD helicopter to be a SWORD drone and the beekeeper revealed to be (as suspected) a SWORD agent attempting to gain access to Westview by going under the town. I do wonder what happened to him was he kicked out or is he some where else, have I missed something?

It was great to finally get answers about the mysteries surrounding Westview, the show waited till the right time and as mentioned giving the SWORD plot it's own episode really allowed the episode time to breath and time for the writers to really make the reveals impactful.

Darcy's involvement here is great, Kat Dennings comedic timing is great, and her chemistry with Randall Park is fantastic. The plot moves on with SWORD trying to figure out what is happening to Westview with Darcy discovering the "show" after detecting cosmic microwave background radiation. Watching the character watching the exact show we watched and try to figure out the same mysteries we did is awesome and something I, being a geek, found to be really cool.

The agents watch the show and piece together the townspeople, discovering who they are (although I didn't see a real name for Agnes). As the show (slowly) pieces together all the events that have happened (the agent in a hazmat suit turning into a beekeeper was a highlight) we begin to catch up with the show reaching the climax of episode three, Now in colour. This confirms finally that Wanda is the one to be enslaving the town, as we finally see the confrontation between her and Monica/Geraldine as Monica is literally thrown out of the town taking a brief detour through some houses.

As Jimmy and Darcy realise that the show skips from Monica's Ultron namedrop to the credits Monica is thrown out of the town reappearing outside the town uttering the words "It's Wanda, it's all Wanda". The episode ends with Wanda, Vision and the twins watching TV while Jimi Hendrix plays us out

.

We Interrupt this Programme is a fantastic episode that brings both the characters and the viewers up to date, giving viewers the answers they wanted as well as setting up the story for Wanda's inevitable fall (and oh do I hope there is a huge battle). The episode is everything needed and refreshes the viewers ready for our Halloween 80's episode next week whilst moving the story on and ensuring that viewers won't want to miss next weeks episode.

The show has five episodes left and for the first time the stakes feel high, the storytelling is magnificent with the next five weeks looking very exciting, it's fair to say WandaVision is everything it needed to be and more.
